I may be in the minority here, but before you pull out your credit card for the magnificent Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8, do this. Take your D40 body into a camera store and mount the lens on it. Then see if the lens is too big for YOU. I’ve used this lens with a D200 and found it was a pretty good balance. The D40 is much lighter and the combination is long and front-heavy. The 70-200mm will also be unusable for wider views. A couple of years ago, I traveled China with a Nikon 18-200mm VR lens. One lens, one body, as I knew I’d be hiking and walking for hours each day.
