Is testing for prostate cancer a good idea?
There is no easy answer to this question. For some men with a family history of prostate cancer it certainly is a good idea. It may be a bad idea for men with a history of chronic disease and a short life expectancy because little or nothing may be gained from treatment. They may also be taking a considerable risk and undergo a hardship by having treatment. It is important that each man discuss the benefits and risks of prostate cancer testing carefully with his doctor before deciding to have a PSA test. Ask your doctor to explain what will need to be done if the PSA test is positive.
