Is tap water really safe for drinking?

Our tap water supplies are, for the most part, safe in terms of being free of disease-causing bacteria. However, water is now showing chemical pollutants (asbestos, copper, cadmium and lead), and the chlorine being used to treat bacteria is interacting in a harmful manner. A filter can remove the mineral impurities, but cannot remove bacteria or parasites below a certain size.
