Is taking a Melatonin supplement effective in preventing or reducing jet lag?
The term jet lag represents the frequent traveller’s symptoms of: sleep disorders; digestive troubles; headache; lack of appetite and fatigue. Studies have shown that exogenous melatonin may significantly reduce the effect of jetlag. In a Cochrane review published in 2001 the researchers concluded that, Melatonin is remarkably effective in preventing or reducing jetlag, and occasional short-term use appears to be safe. It should be recommended to adult travellers flying across five or more time zones, particularly in an easterly direction, and especially if they have experienced jet-lag on previous journeys. Travellers crossing 2-4 time zones can also use it if need be. Herxheimer A, Petrie KJ. Melatonin for the prevention and treatment of jet lag. Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews 2002, Issue 2.
