Not at all. Although the idea of taking time off before starting college is still a new concept in the U.S., taking a gap year is very common in England and Europe. For example, Prince William recently spent his gap year working on a farm in the United Kingdom; helping in community projects with other young people in a remote area of Chile; and visiting countries in Africa before enrolling at the University of St. Andrews. Students who take a year off before college are usually so energized by their experiences that they usually return to the classroom for all of the right reasons.
