Is taking a gap year a choice against going to college?
Not at all. Although the idea of taking time off before starting college is still a new concept in the U.S., taking a gap year is very common in England and Europe. For example, Prince William recently spent his gap year working on a farm in the United Kingdom; helping in community projects with other young people in a remote area of Chile; and visiting countries in Africa before enrolling at the University of St. Andrews. Students who take a year off before college are usually so energized by their experiences that they usually return to the classroom for all of the right reasons. There is nothing like getting some life experiences in the “real world,” figuring out better who you are and want to be, and better understanding the value of getting an education.
