Is Switzerland part of the european union?
No. Switzerland applied to join the European Union in 1992. A referendum on membership of the European Economic Area (EEA) in December 1992 rejected the idea of membership. As a consequence, the Swiss Government suspended negotiations for EU accesion. Its application remains open. With the ratification of bilateral treaties with the European Union, the Swiss Government now regards EU membership as an “option” rather than a “strategic objective.
