Is swimming toning any muscles?
Hi BT, Swimming will burn calories via increased cardiovascular activity and exercise all major muscle groups as you move your body parts through a range of motion. To the extent that your muscles are working against resistance… such as pecs and lats when you pull your arms through the water in the front crawl, they will be required to perform work that will result in what you might call “toning.” You don’t “tone” fat but merely burn calories that can, over time, reduce the amount of fat relative to muscle. By exercising muscle fibers you’ll gain increased strength and endurance as your muscles, heart, lungs become more efficient. Combining swimming with weight training on alternate days is a good routine, IMO. Best wishes.
