Is surgery really necessary for an open bite?

In most minor cases, if it does not bother you it may not be completely necessary other than looks. However, malalignment of anything with teeth can lead to TMJ problems such as popping, clicking, etc. You may already have the popping and clicking and just not the pain. If you have not current jaw popping or clicking, you could probably skip the surgery for now. However, if you already have popping and clicking of the jaw you might want to consider it b/c your jaw will become more worn and begin to be painful just to eat. Also, having an open bite puts lots of extra biting pressure on the back teeth and can lead to needing more crowns on those teeth later in life to support them properly.
