IS SURGE PROTECTION REALLY NECESSARY? WHAT ABOUT BATTERY BACKUP?
Ive always said that Id rather see a client spend less on the bells and whistles and more on surge protection and data backup. Without an explanation of joules and clamp time, suffice it to say that a decent surge protector, which costs about $40, can save your entire computer system. We live in the lightning capital of the world (click HERE for interesting lightning info), and construction is going on all over the area. You should expect power interruptions and surges and be prepared for them. A battery backup or UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) not only keeps your computer running for a little while if the power is cut off, but the battery itself can absorb a substantially larger hit from a surge than a simple surge protector. These cost about $75 and up. Both are an excellent investment, much less expensive than a new computer!
