Is streptococcus harmful?
Yes, streptococcus can cause many communicable diseases but is rarely fatal. The most commonly involved areas of the body are the upper and lower respiratory systems, including the oromaxillary sinuses, nasopharynx, mouth, throat, eustachian tubes and inner ear, mouth and throat; as well as down into the bronchioles of the lungs. Impetigo, scarlet fever and toxic shock syndrome are also related to strep infections. Infections progress rapidly but are usually effectively treated by Gram-positive antibiotics as amoxicillin, erythromycin, and vancomycin.
