Is strength training safe for children? Or will it stunt their growth?
Based on the available scientific information, strength training won’t inhibit a child’s growth under normal circumstances. However, when heavy weights are used and a child works out with improper supervision it can cause injury. More research has shown that strength training, when done safely, can reduce a child’s risk of sustaining sports injuries because of a strong musculoskeletal system. Furthermore, strength training is good to implement in children who show interest, but should be designed using only the minimum level of resistance necessary to produce a training effect.
