Is stranger danger or high rise living more responsible for the decline in childrens freedoms?
The media’s yearn to sell more than the next populist paper biting at their heels – you mention the Moors murderers…can still remember 10 years after their jailing (mid seventies), kids could still go out and play without fear. Can imagine certain newspapers putting fear of West Indian immigrants into the hearts of Whitey from the late 40’s onwards – until 1958, when the immigrants had enough of being treated like aliens, and rioted in Nottingham and Notting Hill.
