Is Stephen Kings THE SHINING scary?
I really enjoyed it. I wanted to hear the snow pelting against the windows more in the old hotel. I wanted to hear that storm (blizzard) raging just outside the flimsy wooden hotel complex. I wanted to hear it echoing down the corridors… Not much was done like that. Atmospherics. The TV was on, and Shelley was sort of watching the weather forecast off to one side, absent-mindedly, and I wanted to hear the storm. I have lived in Maine all my life, and you hear and feel storms. They seal you in (more claustrophobia) and pelt in patterns or beats against your windows. The high winds come in blasts, too, and make the place creak. I wanted to hear that old hotel creak off and on from the blasts of wind during the blizzard that raged almost all the way through the whole film. It was only a polite howling like from about twenty-five miles away with ear-muffs on. It was a very polite storm. It didn’t intrude on the dialogue, unfortunately.
