Is Speech and Language Pathology a hard career?
I was a speech pathologist for 20 years, and worked primarily in the medical setting (teaching hospitals, mostly). Pros: I loved working with patients. I found the medical aspects to be fascinating and ditto for the different medical staff I worked with on a daily basis. I learned an exceptional amount about medicine and the practice thereof. I’m a pretty savvy consumer of healthcare now. There was a different patient with a different disorder every session. In other words, it took a lot of “gear switching” every hour, so I didn’t get bored. One can always switch specialties and/or settings. For example, switching from child language disorders to swallowing disorders, or from working in hospitals to working in schools. It pays well. You can work regular office hours. You can find a job literally anywhere. I was never out of a job for longer than a week.
