Is Special Educational Needs pedagogy different?
Pedagogy is defined by Lewis & Norwich (2005) as ‘the broad cluster of decisions and actions taken in classroom situations that aim to promote school learning’ (p.7). There continues to be debate surrounding to the question of whether there exists teaching methods or approaches that are specific to pupils with SEN (see Lewis & Norwich (2005) see also here) . Lewis & Norwich (2005) ask whether some teaching approaches are more suited to some learners and not to others. They elaborate, and ask whether some pupils required additional teaching of the same kind or teaching of a different kind? This notion was also investigated by Davis & Florian (2003) when they researched the literature on teaching approaches and strategies to support pupils with SEN. They suggest that no single strategy could be said to be the most effective at supporting learners, but rather a variety of methods appear to be effective, not only for particular groups of pupils but also across learner groups. The challenge
