Is South Africa a safe place to visit?

South Africa is not a war zone and you will actually find that as far as airports and hotels go (especially in the more upmarket tourist areas) you will feel completely safe. There is adequate security and you are at no higher risk than you would be in the USA or Europe. In some areas it is perfectly safe to go jogging or take your dog for a walk at night. But in Johannesburg for instance it’s not even advised to stop at traffic lights late at night as this puts you at risk of being hi-jacked. I think as a tourist it is really important to inform yourself about the places you visit and make sure you always have a map and a mobile phone with you. Even better catch up with some of the locals and let them show you around. If you are responsible and use some common sense you should be fine. South Africa is a beautiful country and well worth visiting.
