Is slightly stale bread ok for birds?
Not really. You should feed birds natural foods, similar to what they eat in nature – seeds, grains, nuts, fruits, berries… You can get mealworms for the insect eaters, or offer suet; you can give the nectar drinkers (like hummingbirds) sugar-water. Orioles love grape jelly, and they even sell jelly feeders at wild bird stores. What you should NOT feed is bread, especially plain white bread. A bird’s digestive system can not handle the refined sugars and processed flours in the breads, crackers, cakes, cookies and other human snacks we are so fond of sharing with our feathered friends. While some birds can handle a little bread, to other birds, it can be fatal in and of itself, or it can be the source of fatal bacteria. If you live near the water, and are feeding ducks and geese, NEVER feed bread! “…although Ducks seem to love bread, it is not nutritious. White bread in particular is made from refined flour and is not proper for avian nutrition. Many Ducks suffer from degenerative
