Is sinus surgery dangerous?
There are very real risks in any surgery. Sinus surgery is generally very safe when performed by a skilled, experienced surgeon. As the sinus passages are richly supplied with blood vessels, bleeding may occur, but this is usually minimal. The eyes and brain are immediately adjacent to the sinuses, so these structures are at risk as well, but again, injuries to these structures (possibly causing change in vision or blindness, brain injury, or spinal fluid leakage) are extremely rare. Beyond these risks, more common (but less serious) possibilities include scarring or unfavorable healing of the sinuses that may decrease the success rate of the surgery, numbness, chronic pain, and disturbance in taste or smell. As with anything in life, there are never any guarantees; there is no way to predict with absolute certainty any individual’s likelihood of a “cure” with sinus surgery or the severity of any bumps along the way.
