Is Shrek the highest grossing animated movie of all time?
In 2001, Shrek amassed huge box office numbers, bringing in nearly $268 million domestically. Amazingly enough, that wasn’t enough to put it ahead of The Lion King, which brought in $328 million domestically. But the story doesn’t end there. Shrek 2 was huge and by the time the dust settled, Shrek 2 topped The Lion King with a whopping domestic take of $441 million. That not only makes it the highest grossing animated movie of all time, but also the third highest-grossing movie ever (as of August 2006).
