Is shenanigans a formal enough word to use in an english literature coursework essay?
Speaking as someone with an English literature degree (with very high marks *ahem*), I would say if you think the word ‘fits’ then it is fine. The best writers usually let a little of their personality come through, even in formal academic writing. The word ‘shenanigans’ carries a hint of wryness and irony which, if that is the effect you want, is fine. One word out of place is not going to kill your mark. So long as you express your thought clearly (and it is a thought worth expressing), then your particular choice of words will not matter.
