Is SHC going to fade away after the next national election?
No. SHC is not an initiative of this administration but an improved approach to conservation that will allow the Service to more effectively achieve its mission of conserving fish and wildlife populations. Adopting SHC will have long-term effects on how the agency operates. With an increasing emphasis on reporting performance in terms of resource outcomes (such as progress made in achieving populations goals in a watershed) versus outputs (miles of streams assessed and/or enhanced), the application of SHC will be a high priority throughout the Service. SHC lends itself to more effectively achieving these outcomes and, ultimately, species conservation.
