Is Service Learning a Requirement?
Yes, a minimum of 40 hours of service-learning is a graduation requirement for all students. Additionally, students must complete at least 20 hours of service by the end of their sophomore year in order to be promoted to the next grade level. Of the 40 hours, only 20 hours can be awarded for projects directly benefiting our school. What is an allowable Service Learning Activity? Students may earn Service Learning hours through the following: • Classroom projects that are tied to curriculum and meet a community need • After school projects that meet a community need and have a clear academic objective • Individual service activities with non-profit community organizations where students receive preparation for the work and produce a reflection/analysis of their work. Restricted Service Activities Students may not earn Service Learning hours through the following: • Work with for-profit businesses and corporations • Religious organizations if the service involves proselytizing • Voluntee
