A rear view mirror is used on a road vehicle. Once it is adjusted it is left in a fixed position and used by the driver to see in one direction. There is a big difference between driving down the road and scuba diving. While diving we are surrounded by water and move about in a 3 dimensional world which has six directions, up/down (altitude), north/south (latitude) and east/west (longitude). The most efficient way to move through the water is to keep the body in a horizontal streamlined position which reduces drag and saves our air supply. To see behind or above, the diver must stop and take the body out of the streamlined position in order to look. This movement creates drag and uses energy which increases air consumption.
