According to the National Institute of Mental Health, having certain inherited genetic combinations does predispose an individual to develop schizophrenia. The overall risk for getting schizophrenia is about 1%, however in studies of identical twins, researchers found that if one twin had the disease, the other twin’s risk for becoming schizophrenic rose to 47%.

Since identical twins share the same genes, however, if schizophrenia were only genetic or hereditary, there would be 100% correlation between one twin having schizophrenia and the other getting it. The fact that this 100% correlation does not exist suggests that there are also environmental factors at play.

So, yes, schizophrenia does have a strong genetic component, but no, it is not 100% hereditary.
