Yes, Sanibel is known as a popular nesting place for loggerhead turtles, and sea turtles in general. It’s not far from my mother’s home in Florida, and I remember several fun trips there to gather amazing sea shells! They do get lots of tourists, but it’s not too bad, really. They come to visit the J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge and the 12-mile curved, white beach which fronts on the Gulf of Mexico. The beaches are ungroomed, which makes them perfect nesting areas for sea turtles and other wildlife. “A successful sea turtle research and conservation effort was founded on the islands in 1959.
