Is S4C Analogue available digitally?
S4C’s traditional analogue service, which broadcasts Channel 4’s English programmes, is unavailable digitally. Since S4C was established in 1982, Channel 4’s output has been incorporated into our schedules to compensate for the fact that the old analogue system of transmission did not have sufficient capacity to make Channel 4 itself available via Welsh transmitters. That situation will continue until such time as the government decides to switch off analogue broadcasting in the UK. Digital television enables far more channels to be transmitted alongside each other on all three platforms (digital terrestrial, satellite and cable). Therefore, since Channel 4 itself is now freely available throughout Wales on digital, S4C’s digital service is able to concentrate exclusively on broadcasting in Welsh, which is available, as you know on channel 135 on Sky outside Wales.
