Is Russia Hindering United States Adoption?
There have always been obstacles hindering people from adopting in foreign countries as American families try desperately to give impoverished children a better life. And now Russia is closing its doors to most Americans who want Russian children as their own, through a process that goes back several decades. Their action follows China and Guatemala who have also placed new obstacles in the adoption process. 70% of the children from those three countries, which accounts for 10% of all U.S. Adopted children, have come to the U.S. in the past 5 years Russia created more stringent rules for accrediting adoption agencies in the past year, and as of yet has not renewed the licenses for some 50 or so American agencies that are working to find these children a family. The one-year licenses have expired for the last two agencies that were still in operation.
