Rome is a beautiful city but like most capital cities, it’s expensive. Do go to the shops on Via dei Condotti near the Spanish Steps but unless you’re very rich (or have saved very hard) don’t buy there. The designer shops (Gucci, Prada, Versace, Bulgari the jeweller, etc) are all there but the prices are astronomical. It’s good fun to go inside and look though (they’re all air conditioned too which is a real bonus in Rome in the summer!). Via del Corso is also a good shopping street used by Romans as well as tourists – for things like CDs, DVDs (very expensive in Italy though) and some smaller clothes shops. It runs from the PIazza del Popolo. But if you’re looking for nice gifts to take back home, try going to a bridge called the Ponte Sant’Angelo which is near the Vatican (all tours go there so you’re bound to see it). Go to the far side of the bridge near the Castel Sant’Angelo and turn right before you get to the castle. You’ll find a little street market which sells nice handmade
