Yes, it is pretty odd.. However, you have to remember that it was written in the time period when death and horror was an everyday, second-nature, common thing. It was written before A.D. 200. There are many sybolisms used, that’s what makes it pretty odd to us modern people. The passages cannot be taken literal.
