Is “retort” the correct term to use when referring to cremation equipment?
Most cremation equipment falls into one of two types: In-Line or Retort. Retort is the correct term for a specific type of cremation equipment, also called a hot hearth. If you are unsure, an easy way to determine what design of cremation equipment you have is to first look at the loading height. In-Line designs have lower loading heights that are 24 to 28 inches from floor level and are usually cold hearths. This means that the exhaust gases do not flow back beneath the hearth where the body is placed. Retort designs usually have higher loading levels because the exhaust gases do, indeed, flow back underneath the hearth. These retort designs typically have lower fuel usage, quicker cremation times and better environmental performances.
