Is resistance against Tamiflu a worry?

0

“It is a concern that influenza viruses could become resistant to anti-viral drugs such as Tamiflu but at the present the experience is that these drugs do work and should work against a pandemic strain. They need to be used carefully and appropriately to minimise the risk of resistance”. How many antivirals have we got so far and when will we get all 14.6 million? The first deliveries have already been received we will have 2.5 million courses by the end of October We expect to have 7.3 million treatment courses by March 2006 and the stockpile will be complete by March 2007. Who will get the anti-virals? The antivirals will be given to health workers, as a priority as they will have a higher risk of exposure to the virus. Antivirals will then be given on the basis of clinical need i.e. to those in whom pandemic flu will be more serious. We are doing more work on which groups will be prioritised to receive the drugs in a pandemic and will publish this in due course. Who is prioritised
