Is Religious Education compulsory in schools?
Yes, and has been since 1944 in all schools and for all pupils, unless their parents choose to withdraw them. RE in community schools follows a local syllabus in which pupils have the opportunity to explore a range of religions and to consider some of the fundamental questions that they raise. There is no attempt at indoctrination in community schools. If parents wish to withdraw their children they are recommended to discuss their reasons with the Head Teacher.
