No he is only a tool to central theme. Live in peace and harmony is important in human life. Food, Clothe, Shelter & Governance are the basics of it. Religion plays a major role to achieve it. Individual practices his religious beliefs, more he thrives in education, health and mental health, marriage, family and organized life; less likely is he to be involved in crime, addiction, abuse or a host of other ills, a savage life as he was doing during the cave days. Religion helps us to transmit our values from one generation to another, and influences the way we interact with the natural environment.
