Dr. Usui did seek the knowledge of the Buddhist priests before giving his REIKI method to the world. Ancient Chinese, Tibetan, Buddhist and Bn healing treatments included energy healing, but I believe that Dr. Usui formulated his laying of hands technique in a specific way so as to provide an effective method of treatment without the many complexities associated with other healing techniques.
