Is recovery like a near-death experience?

Yeah, there’s no question. I feel as though I’ve been blessed with two very separate and distinct lives. I literally feel that Feb. 17, 1986 [the date he got sober] I was reborn. I was given a second chance. And it’s not just like, well, I got to get sober that day. It was literally like a rebirth, for lack of a better way of explaining it. There’s a spiritual shift where your entire life changes. My entire life changed. This was a transformative, spiritual profound cellular shift. I mean, anybody who’s had these kinds of experiences knows what I’m talking about, and if you haven’t, you can’t imagine. You just become aware that there is something else that has enormous power that can do something for you that you can’t do for yourself. Once you tap into that, then the evidence of that is everywhere. Q. How do you tap into that? I don’t know. I mean, I don’t know. I think that it is grace, you know. And grace is not something that you can get or demand or plead for. You can plead for it
