Is re-joining the Australian Computer Society a worth while exercise?

G’day Gary, I am a member and every year struggle with this question when the LARGE renewal bill arrives. To me I do not expect them to be up to date with the leading edge in technology, governance etc. What I would hope is that they are a voice in the ear of the government as to key longer term issues with regard to ICT in Australia. They do suffer from the usual problem of mainly volunteer organisations, people who involve themselves in committees etc often have their own barrow to push and I find that awkward. I do not see a bias towards application development but I do see a bias towards hype in the technology area. I continue to belong as it does give me an insight into what policy makers are being told and what at least a part of the Australian ICT market thinks is important. The special interest groups are often interesting and that is one place that some leading edge material does seem to be covered.
