Is Radio Frequency Radiation emitted by cellphone tower antennas harmful to humans residing near the site.?
Low Frequency elecromagnetic waves emanating from cellphone antennas, electricity pylons are not harmful per se. They have too low an energy per photon to cause genetic damage (unlike UV, X-rays or Gamma rays). However, these fields can induce charge in people exposed in their proximity. It is possible that this could attract a preponderance of Radon particles to someone thus exposed. Radiation levels from Radon gas in buildings etc rarely exceed the danger threshold- it’s about 20Bq/m3.. However Radon ingestion at a higher level (down mines for example) is known to induce Lung cancer.Radon decays rapidly by alpha-decay to Polonium, Lead and Bismuth. Alpha radiation is relatively innocuous externally due to its short range in air, but internally releases considerable ionising energy sufficient to damage the cellular DNA causing potentially carcinogenic mutations. So the answer is indirectly because of the natural presence of radioactive species.
