Is public elementary school lunch good or bad for kids?
Well, as a teacher, I have to tell you I avoid walking past the lunchroom at my school because of the smell of the food. I believe most school lunches are very high in fat, salt, carbs and other undesireables. The law says they have to meet a certain nutritional requirement, so I suppose in theory they are healthy, but then, they are only nutritionally balanced if the kids are eating everything offered to them. Most kids throw away the fruits, veggies or anything else healthy, but they load up on the mac and cheese, pizza, etc. LOL – my students all bring their uneaten (still wrapped in cellophane) salads to our class guinea pigs – there is always WAY too much salad for the guinea pigs to eat! Personally, I think I would pack a lunch for my child. I honestly think that Peanut Butter and Jelly on whole wheat is healthier than school mac and cheese. If I wanted my child to eat healthy, I wouldn’t count on the school to feed completely healthy meals….I’d take that responsibility myself.
