Is PTH gene expression increased in renal failure?

0

Am Soc Nephrol J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract) (Sep) 7:1818 1996 It is generally agreed that there is an increased PTH mRNA to b-actin or GAPDH mRNA ratio in parathyroid glands or parathyroid-thyroid gland complexes in uremic rats. Using 3 independent assay methods, the authors found no significant increase in PTH/b-actin mRNA in the parathyroid glands of uremic rats but was increased when assaying parathyroid and thyroid tissue. They conclude that the increases in PTH in CRF are not due to increased PTH gene expression but rather an increase in parathyroid cell number and, perhaps, the rate of PTH secretion per cell. Comment: This is a controversial study that, if correct, will require a revision of our current concepts of the pathogenesis of hyperparathyroidism in renal failure. (James A.
