Is profit-motive the fatal bane of laissez-faire economic liberalism?

Or, the only one that works, anyway. Lenin, Trotsky, even Marx were all taken up with the idea of a communist “ideal” wherein “From each according to his ability; to each according to his need.” What they couldn’t admit was that those with ability weren’t giving it for free. They knew they worked harder than the next guy, and expected to be paid by their work. Meanwhile, the next guy takes the free ride any way he can get it. And everyone is at the sauna, everyone is drinking vodka, and little labor is actually done but by the very few “true believers” of the communist ideal. “Profit” is the only universal motivation; not everyone is susceptible to an economic religion.
