Several political commentators have remarked, over the past few months, that some presidents merely want to be something (i.e. to be president), whereas others wish to do something; and that Barack Obama falls into the latter category. Moreover, President Obama is (ex hypothesi) perfectly willing to be a one-term president, if necessary, in order to enact a leftist agenda that will be irreversible, for all practical purposes. In a way, that stands in refreshing contradistinction to Bill Clinton, who had no discernable political-philosophy views; but merely “triangulated” out of political expediency, sometimes veering to the center-left, and other times leaning center-right. Still, I would hate to see America transformed into a democratic-socialist state (with a deeply attenuated emphasis on the “democratic” part), out of some doctrinaire leftist agenda by the current president.
