Conception happens within 48 hours of when you ovulate – most women ovulate 14 days after the first day of their last period. However, everyone is different and some women ovulate at different times in the cycle, especially if your period isn’t regular. If you’re planning to have sex without protection, you need to spend a couple of months working out which day you ovulate, then you can plan which days are safe and which days you’re fertile. You do this by taking your temperature every day, first thing in the morning before you get out of bed. Your temperature will go up a degree or so when you ovulate, so when you’re fertile, then go back down when the egg has passed into the womb and you’re not fertile any more. Remember, if you’re using this method of contraception, it’s never 100% safe! There are heaps of websites about this – look up ‘when do I ovulate’ or ‘when am I fertile’ on Google.
