Is Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) available in WA?
Following proclamation of recent amendments, the Reproductive Technology Council may now approve the diagnostic testing of embryos (including Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD)). These procedures may be carried out for people who are eligible to undergo IVF in WA, that is, those who are ‘unable to conceive a child due to medical reasons’ (ie infertile), or ‘whose children may be affected by a genetic abnormality or disease’. Council may approve tests where there is a ‘significant risk of a serious genetic abnormality or disease being present in the embryo’. Although all tests require Council approval, not all will require case by case approval. Sex selection, other than to avoid transmission of a sex-linked disorder, is not permitted.
