Is poverty a justifiable excuse for crime?

Depends on the crime. For example, I would find shoplifting food justifiable, but not drug trafficking as someone else said. I would find a cancer patient on medicaid working under the table justifiable. I mean, a lot of time people with cancer cant get medical insurance anywhere else, cant afford treatment on their own working even full time, but reporting any work will forfeit the medical, but, you have have a way to pay the rent mortgage electric. Atleast they are trying to pay for some things on their own. I would find lieing about your child’s address to get them into a better school district justifiable. Most schools that are in areas of poverty are really bad.

I would not find anything justifiable for a crime myself. I mean i could see how others would see it as an excuse. As having kids or responsibilities and being a victim of poverty might cloud judgements and ‘people’ may want to do anything even if it means ruining somebodys’ whole day.

Starvation is the next step after poverty. Starvation is a good excuse, but poverty isn’t far behind. What is unforgivable is greed, as a motivation – as seen on the stock exchanges.

Poverty certainly qualifies as an excuse in my book, given that the crime is a minor offense, such as drug trafficking or burglary, rather than a more hostile crime such as murder and rape.
