Poveglia is a small island located between Venice and Lido in the Venetian Lagoon, Italy. A small canal divides the island into two parts. [edit] History During Roman times it was used to isolate thousands of plague victims, and during the three occasions when the Black Death spread through Europe, the island was effectively used as a lazaretto and plague pit—it was considered an efficient way of keeping the infected people separated from the healthy. It is believed that over 160,000 people died on the island throughout its history.[citation needed] The island was home to a small community until it was abandoned around 1380, during the War of Chioggia between Venice and Genoa. In 1922, a mental hospital was built on the island. Poveglia Island is exactly located in between Lido and Venice. A beautiful slim canal bifurcate the island into two parts. It is worth watching but now it is closed for the visitors and tourists. Although it is one of the beautiful piece of land on the ocean but the history of Poveglia is not at all beautiful. Poveglia was considered as the best place to isolate the large number of victims of Plague. The Plague is the disease caused by enterobacteria Yersinia pestis. It is a kind of infectious disease caused by the rats. In the Roman time, thousands of people suffered from Plague and they were kept at Poveglia Island, and thousands died by this deadly infection.
