Is playing the piccolo different from playing the flute?

I use to play flute, now I am trying piccolo. Does anyone know if it is really different from playing the flute?- I mean like tuba to flute or like flute to flute? I am a first chair flute…our band won the southern star competition of 08 and 09 and previous years…I guess Im a fair flute then. It’s not really all that different at all. I never played piccolo, but I knew someone who switched from flute to piccolo without any issue. I think the main difference is since it is smaller you use less air then with a flute, but since it is smaller you have to have greater lip control. You could also try picking up the sax. The notes are exactly the same as the flute, the main difference being the mouthpiece, which is a huge difference. However, many flute players can also/ or try to play sax as well. Have fun!
