Is playing fast and “shredding” important to be a good guitar or bass player?

I have been playing guitar and bass for the past 5 years.I have noticed that for the past 5 years, my guitar and bass playing skills have gone up a lot, and I can play relatively fast, but I still cannot “shred” or play extremely fast solos. I think it’s cause I have no real interest in metal or speedy guitar solos. I just want to know if it is really necessary to learn how to play fast to “know” how to play an instrument? Is playing extremely fast really that important? Thanks. Just for the record, I can play pretty fast. I just don’t know hot to improvise metal solos and licks, and play 4-5 minute shredder solos. I play both guitar and bass–mostly bass. Extremely fast playing is not really necessary, depending upon your situation. If you are in a band that wants you to do it, then it is necessary. But I haven’t found too many situations where that happens! The thing is this, You Can Play, now what are you going to do? Some guys put all of their energy into the speed of their playing. S
