Is Pentecostalism and Charismatic Christianity growing in South America and Asia?
South America, Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa are now the largest Christian populations in the world. The European and American Christian populations are dwarfed in sheer number, in concentration (percentage of those claiming to be Christian), and in church growth. Today they are starting to send large numbers of missionaries to Europe and America. This growth in this part of the world means that they are the “majority church.” This term, majority church, is now considered the correct way to refer to Christians in these three areas of the world. Those who are Christians there are considered “majority church christians.” While the Roman Catholic presence has always been strong in much of South and Central America, the current trend in all of the majority world (or 2/3’s world, what used to be known as the “third world” but now holds around 2/3’s of the world’s population) is that there is an unprecedented growth among the charismatic and pentecostal movements.
