Is Penn State RB Evan Royster really a Heisman candidate this season?
Highly doubtful only because his coach has too much integrity to participate in the full-blown PR campaign schools do these days. Many schools get busy in the spring sending out slick press releases touting one of their own as Heisman candidate to ESPN, Fox Sports, SI, Sporting News, etc. just to get into the pre-season “buzz.” They also send out weekly updates, provide quotes, make interview availabilities, and more during the season to the point of launching all-out advertising campaigns worthy of a race for public office more so than an amateur athletics trophy. Many think this is why some Penn State Heisman hopefuls (Ki Jana Carter, Kerry Collins, Larry Johnson) have come up just short since the 1980’s when this insanity started.
