Paypal is safe. It acts as a go-between for buyer and seller. But scammers do use Gumtree, and offering more than you are asking is very suspicious. Just log into your account, to see if the money is there, then you can post the item. Scammers sometimes send spoof emails, with official-looking Paypal headers, so logging in and checking is the only way to be sure you have the money.
